What were once commonly called "soft skills" or "interpersonal skills" are now widely recognized as "durable skills." This term emphasizes their lasting value and relevance across various industries and evolving technologies. These are the foundational human capabilities that endure regardless of technological change.
What is the industry demand?
Analytical thinking remains the most sought after core skill, with seven out of 10 companies considering it as essential in 2025, followed by resilience, flexibility and agility, along with leadership and social influence.
AI and big data top the list of fastest-growing skills, followed closely by networks and cybersecurity as well as technology literacy. Our Origin Story
AbilityArc™ was born from a persistent observation and a deep personal conviction. For over a decade, our founder, Dave Alexander, worked in training and certification industry, helping educators equip students with the technical skills needed for the workforce.
Yet, there always seemed to be an "elephant in the room." Dave sat on professional advisory committees, and the message from employers was consistent and clear: While the technical aptitude of students was often there, the critical abilities like communication, problem-solving, and collaboration were consistently missing. Educators acknowledged this need but were often constrained by time and resources, focusing intensely on the ever-evolving technical demands. There simply wasn't a readily available, integrated solution to effectively teach these essential human skills alongside technical curriculum.
This disconnect has become even more apparent with the accelerating advancements in AI and the disruptive experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. Durable skills – the ability to adapt, think critically, and connect with others – are not just beneficial, they are foundational for navigating uncertainty and thriving in a changing job market. For many students entering high school and college, who experienced significant disruption during their formative years, the need for this type of hands-on, confidence-building skills education is stronger than ever.
Dave experienced the impact of lacking these skills himself early in his career, navigating the job market during the Recession with a profound lack of awareness about their importance. He witnessed firsthand the struggles of students battling self-doubt despite their potential and the frustrations of dedicated educators who lacked the tools to fully prepare them.
This accumulation of experience, observation, and personal empathy ignited the drive to create Life Lessons LLC. Dave envisions AbilityArc™ as a solution that bridges the gap and provides educators with the integrated, hands-on curriculum they need while empowering students with the durable skills and confidence to not just better help them get a job, but to help them avoid unnecessary stress and frustration along their career journey.
